Designing an Engaging Exam Experience with Gamification and Peer Motivation

GradeUp is an AI-powered augmented learning app that brings everyday textbooks to life. Students are able to access digital contents from the pages of their books using QR codes technology.

This project showcases the test-taking feature of uLearn that provides opportunities for learners to experience gamified assessment and evaluation through a fun-filled learning.

The Challenge

Students attending secondary schools throughout Nigeria who prepare for national examinations including WAEC, NECO and UTME encounter several obstacles. Most students find conventional learning approaches such as textbook reading to be uninteresting and challenging to grasp especially when dealing with challenging topics in Biology and Physics. Students face performance-related social expectations which damage their self-assurance to the point that they become less interested in learning. Students show wide-ranging differences in their study habits combined with personal device availability and motivation levels because they include both achievement-oriented students who want challenging material and students who avoid studying entirely.

Students need a method to practice exam questions which adjusts to their learning speed while keeping them engaged and reducing anxiety to build academic confidence with no compromise on academic standards.

How I started

After the initial documentation was passed to me, I met with the Product team and product owner to understand the goals and to brainstorm viable ideas for the product. I also met with the Curriculum team to gather further requirements for the assessment feature.


Research

To better understand the target users, I conducted secondary research starting with a few key questions: Who are they? What are their goals? What motivates them? Through reviewing existing studies and reports, I gathered insights that helped paint a clearer picture of Nigerian secondary school students preparing for exams. This research revealed their diverse backgrounds, varying motivations, and the unique challenges they face — from limited resources and exam anxiety to a strong preference for engaging, gamified learning experiences that fit their lifestyle and environment.



I reviewed a range of existing research—including academic studies, government reports, and educational analyses—to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges students face.


Gamified Learning Boosts Engagement

Over 75% of surveyed African students are more engaged and motivated when learning includes gamified or social features.

Exam Anxiety Is Common

Studies in Edo State and Ilorin show that exam anxiety is widespread, negatively impacting student performance and well-being.

Traditional Methods Lack Appeal

Most students only study intensively right before exams, citing boredom and low motivation with conventional study approaches.

Diverse Needs Call for Flexible Solutions

While some students excel, many struggle with consistent engagement, highlighting the need for adaptable learning tools.

To bring these insights to life, I developed detailed user personas representing typical Nigerian secondary school students preparing for exams. These personas capture their backgrounds, goals, motivations, and challenges, helping to keep the user perspective at the heart of the design process.



My Hypothesis

If students are provided with an exam practice app that combined gamification, social features, and flexible learning modes, they would be more motivated to study, feel less exam anxiety, and gain confidence in challenging subjects. By creating a low-pressure environment where they could choose when to take graded tests and receive immediate feedback, students would build better study habits and engage more consistently throughout the school year.



Early Concepts & Idea Exploration

In the early stages, I explored various ways students could prepare for national exams. I brainstormed formats ranging from flashcard apps and textbook summaries to more interactive quiz-based tools. One idea involved a purely offline question bank, while another leaned heavily into gamified peer challenges. I also considered motivational systems inspired by mobile games like Duolingo — including XP, streaks, and badges.

A key challenge was balancing academic rigor with engagement. I wanted students to take preparation seriously, but not feel overwhelmed or bored. This led me to explore different assessment types and user flows to meet students where they are — whether just starting out or revising intensively.

The Solution

The final solution is a mobile-first quiz app designed to help Nigerian secondary school students practice and prepare for WAEC, NECO, and UTME exams. It supports different types of assessments, flexible modes of engagement, and uses gamification to keep learners coming back.

Key features:

Dual Exam Modes: Offering both Practice Mode and Graded Mode to support different learning stages. Practice mode would lower entry barriers, while Graded mode simulates real exams for readiness.

Assessment Variety: Including topic-based, subject-wide, and past exams gave users the flexibility to study how they want, when they want.

Gamification Layer: To boost engagement, I integrated XP points, progress bars, and performance-based leaderboards, allowing learners to feel rewarded.

Offline Capability: Recognising data costs and device constraints, I prioritised offline access to key content and performance tracking.

Social Elements: To align with students’ motivations, I considered features like peer comparison, streaks, and shareable achievements.
